Sadly the planned session at Finn & Bear on Sunday 3rd has been cancelled. Not so much startled as disappointed bee. As you can see, the bear is really cut up.
Playing about half an hour at the bijou Jinglin’ Geordie on Fleshmarket Close. I’m on at about 10pm. Mix of covers, mph numbers and one or two of the bee’s own. Organised and hosted by Pressure Valve‘s Phil Ramsay.
The evening’s line up is:
- 9.00 Lynzie Dray
- 9.30 James Gamgee
- 10.00 Startled Bee
- 10.30 Euan Glasgow
- 11.00 Tau Boo
I’ll be playing the “feature” spot at Out of the Bedroom on Thursday 16th November 2017 (Facebook event link). Out of the Bedroom is super-friendly Edinburgh open mic night that takes place in Woodland Creatures on Leith Walk. It’s originals only and you usually get two or three songs. It runs from 8pm (but sign up from 7.30) and the feature act is usually on around 10pm.
This song began as a piano based co-write with Claire McBrien at the 2017 Glasgow Songwriting Festival when, for some reason, I was singing an octave up. The song has evolved a little bit since with an extra verse and a finger-picked accompaniment.
mph (matt and phil holmes) is an ongoing songwriting and recording project. Startled Bee performs acoustic arrangements of songs from the mph song book as well as Startled Bee originals and the occasional cover.

Created at a Look and Draw workshop. Twelve images were animated in an actual zoetrope. Here I’ve compiled the images into a GIF to reproduce, roughly, the effect.
It takes a while. I didn’t have time to put on the bee’s knees (or legs or feet).
